Scything

Wilder had a crash course in scything this month at beautiful Fishponds Park, where we cut the hay meadow.

We saw the advantages of scything in action:

🌾 you get a variation in sward height which is good for biodiversity

🐸 we saw small creatures such as toads in the cut grass which would have been killed by a mower

πŸ’ͺ🏾πŸ’ͺ🏽πŸ’ͺ🏼it's good exercise! Apparently physios love scything because of the spinal rotation involved

⛽️ low carbon - no fossil fuels

πŸ”‡ no noise pollution, which is damaging for people and nature

😌 it's mindful and relaxing, and connects you to 7000 of years of farming heritage

This toad survived the scythe
